Wanderers and Titans
Hello from the Wanderers and Titans (W&T) Foundation and we hope you’re finding things going a bit easier as shops and businesses begin to reopen from the COVID-19 lockdown. More than a few of us heaved sighs of relief as bars and restaurants returned and some shouts of joy were heard as schools reopened.
The Board of the W&T Foundation met on July 13 to map out our next steps. Attending the meeting were Chairman George Rippon along with Board members Brent Baker and Calven Bland from Titans RFC and Scott Cochrane from Wanderers RFC.
During the depths of Singapore’s COVID-19 lockdown, the Foundation put together a socially-distant Pub Quiz via Zoom hosted by Wanderers legend Matt O’Leary. While a touch chaotic at times, the affair raised $900 for the Foundation and showcased the trivia acumen of the winning team of Wanderer Phil Gockel and family.
Calven reported that the proceeds from the event lifted the Foundation’s financial holdings to $8,200 at this time.
Further regarding the Foundation finances, Calven noted a tremendous gift as a result of fundraising efforts made in the name of Wanderers and Titans stalwart Ron Lowe, who sadly passed away in May.
A Go Fund Me page in Ron’s memory has raised a substantial amount that his wife Diya has proposed donating for supporting the Foundation. Everyone at the Foundation acknowledges that this is a fantastic gift that could go a long way to bolstering our finances and we are deeply grateful for Diya’s help in supporting the mission of the W&T Foundation to increase rugby participation among disadvantaged communities in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
Looking ahead for the rest of the year, the Foundation is aware that both fundraising and disbursement plans remain constricted by the current COVID-19 restrictions in Singapore. We remain hopeful that some activities may occur later this year as the restrictions are eased, potentially around the SCC 7’s.
Regards,
W&T Foundation Board.
